
Jazmine Sullivan was born in and was raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her mother Pam was a vocalist for the backup band of Philadelphia International Records. Her father offered an opportunity to be the curator of the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She and her family then moved in to the historic place of historical significance. She graduated in 2005 from the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts in which she was a vocal music major. Sullivan was a contralto for the choir for children and later, a few more years later, she sang as an adult in the choir. Sullivan experienced only a small amount of secular music. The singer recalls she was just 11 years old when a person requested her to sing in a solo at the church. However, she was not enough yet to be ready. "Then McDonald's offered a competition to kids from cities. Then I had an opportunity to sing The Grace God Gives me on Showtime Apollo. The crowd was accommodating." She sang with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday in the year 13. Sullivan aged 15 was signed for the first time to Jive Records. When she was 15 She was signed by Jive Records. She made an complete album, but the album was never made available for release. Sullivan was then dropped by the label. The singer maintained a relationship with Missy Elliott she produced several tracks in her debut album like the huge hit track "Backstabbers" which was produced by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
